Core Stability Exercise Versus General Exercise for Chronic Low Back Pain
What?
A Meta-Analysis of core stability exercise versus general exercise in the treatment of chronic LBP. Five studies involving 414 patients were included.
Who?
Participants were male and female adults with LBP for at least 3 months that was not caused by a specific known condition.
Results!
At 3 months core stability exercise was more effective than general exercise for decreasing pain and increasing back-specific functional status in patients with LBP.
So what?
In patients with chronic pain specific core exercises are often overlooked in preference for the simplicity of general exercise. In some cases patients are reluctant to get moving and any exercise is better than no exercise but for patients motivated to treat or manage their pain core exercises are more effective.
